Anonymous Usage
You can use OpenShortPath without creating an account, but with stricter limits to prevent abuse.
Rate Limits:
- 5 requests per hour per IP - API requests are limited to 5 per hour from the same IP address
- 1,000 links per month per IP - Total link creation is limited to 1,000 per month per IP address
Restrictions:
- No persistent account or dashboard access
- No link management after creation
- Limits are enforced per IP address, which may affect users behind shared networks
- No API key generation or authentication
Best for: Quick, one-off link shortening without account creation.
Note: To remove these restrictions and get better limits, consider creating a free account or upgrading to a paid plan. See the API Reference for details on how to authenticate and use the API.
Verified Access
Verified Access is a one-time payment option that provides lifetime API access without a recurring subscription.
Pricing: $10 one-time payment
Features:
- Lifetime API Access - Permanent access to the API without expiration
- No Rate Limits - Removes the 5 per hour rate limit restriction
- Standard Link Limit - 1,000 links per month (same as Hobbyist plan)
- No Recurring Fees - Pay once and use forever
- Full API/CLI Access - Complete access to all API endpoints and CLI tools
Best for: Users who want API access without monthly subscriptions but don't need the higher limits of the Pro plan.
Important: Verified Access removes rate limits but maintains the 1,000 links/month limit. If you need more than 1,000 links per month, consider the Pro plan.

Understanding Limits
Link Limits
Link limits are calculated on a monthly basis and reset at the beginning of each calendar month. For example:
- If you create 500 links in January, you can create 500 more before hitting the 1,000 limit
- On February 1st, your limit resets and you can create another 1,000 links
Note: Deleted links do not count toward your monthly limit, but they also don't free up space in your current month's allocation.
Rate Limits
Rate limits control how many API requests you can make within a specific time window:
- Hobbyist Plan: 5 requests per hour
- Anonymous Usage: 5 requests per hour per IP address
- Verified Access & Pro: No rate limits
If you exceed your rate limit, you'll receive a 429 Too Many Requests error. Wait until the time window resets before making additional requests.
For more information about API endpoints and authentication, see the API Reference.
IP-Based Limits (Anonymous)
Anonymous usage limits are enforced per IP address. This means:
- Multiple users behind the same network (e.g., office, school) share the same limits
- Using a VPN or proxy may affect which IP address is used for rate limiting
- Limits reset based on the IP address, not per user

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I exceed my link limit?
If you exceed your monthly link limit, API requests to create new links will return a 429 Too Many Requests error. You'll need to wait until the next month or upgrade your plan.
Can I delete old links to free up space?
Deleting links doesn't free up space in your current month's allocation. However, deleted links no longer count toward your total link count, and you can create new links once your monthly limit resets.
Do rate limits apply to reading links?
Rate limits primarily apply to write operations (creating, updating, deleting links). Reading links (GET requests) typically have higher or no rate limits, but this may vary by plan.
Can I switch between plans?
Yes! You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. Changes take effect immediately:
- Upgrading: You get immediate access to higher limits
- Downgrading: You keep access until the end of your current billing period
What's the difference between Verified Access and Pro?
- Verified Access: One-time $10 payment, 1,000 links/month, unlimited API rate limits
- Pro: $5/month subscription, 10,000 links/month, unlimited API rate limits, plus webhooks and priority support
Choose Verified Access if you want API access without recurring fees. Choose Pro if you need more links or advanced features.
